| REACH Apparel Manufacturing Summit - An Overview |
|
| |
The "REACH Apparel Manufacturing Summit" is the first ever effort to bring together Policy makers, Apparel Enterprises, Academic and Research Institutions, Senior Government Officials and Information Technology vendors to drive the accelerated adoption of IT solutions by the Indian sewn products industry to compete effectively in the global market.
India manufactures apparel worth over Rs.75,000 crores. This is expected to touch Rs. 250,000 crores by 2010.
IT investment in the industry - traditionally a low tech, labour intensive one - has taken off exponentially in the last couple of years. A number of factors have aided this: |
| 1 |
Elimination of quantitative restrictions and the need to be globally competitive. |
| 2 |
A hugely exploded supply base thanks to advances in computing and telecom capabilities. |
| 3 |
De-reservation of apparel from the small-scale sector. |
| 4 |
Infusion of professionally qualified manpower. |
Analysts estimate the potential IT spent by the apparel sector to be in the range 0.75 to 1 % of the total industry size of Rs. 75,000 crores. i.e. an IT spent of Rs.530 to Rs. 700 crores. |
