Before coming to Bangalore I was given numerous briefings from friends on what the city is like and what to expect. One thing that I quickly learnt on my arrival is that no amount of briefings or impromptu Hindi classes (most people here speak kannada anyway) can prepare you for the feast for the senses that is Bangalore.
Bangalore is a vibrant, magnet of a city that has attracted people from all over India and the world. The influence of foreign companies and people serve to make the city rather cosmopolitan. The 'Garden City' communicates its unique personality through a number of sources. The assortment of sights and sounds perfectly compliment the energetic and sometimes noisy city. An example of the noise would be with my first experience of Indian roads. Being from England where it is considered to be frightfully impolite to use your horn unless absolutely essential you notice immediately that it's not the same here. it's also great to meet friendly people who are willing to communicate; first question normally being "what country boss?". Once they here where I'm from conversation quickly moves to cricket and the current test match.
Working at REACH is also very interesting. As a recent graduate I feel that it is important to gain an understanding of different work practices and working at REACH has given me that opportunity. Spending a lot of time in the office has sadly given me little time to see much of Bangalore and the pubs it is famous for but it helps that the office is a great environment conducive of work and the people are also great. The work is also very interesting; you are given real work and responsibility from the very first day. Part of my work will soon involve me calling companies in England; I look forward to having to explain to them that I'm calling from India in an English accent.
After my first two weeks I am genuinely happy to have had the opportunity to come to India and I'm looking forward to the following months. I am enthused by the work and direction the company is taking. Also I am really excited about discovering what the rest of South India has to offer. |
